Dermaplaning: Separating Myths from Facts

Dermaplaning has exploded in popularity over the past few years, and for good reason. But with popularity comes misinformation. As a licensed esthetician in Roseville, I want to set the record straight on some common dermaplaning myths.

Myth #1: Hair Will Grow Back Thicker and Darker

The Truth: This is the most common concern I hear from clients in Roseville and Rocklin. Dermaplaning removes vellus hair (peach fuzz), which is genetically programmed to grow back at the same texture and color. The hair may feel slightly different as it grows back because the tip is blunt from being cut, but it will taper naturally just as before.

Myth #2: Dermaplaning Causes Breakouts

The Truth: When performed correctly by a licensed professional, dermaplaning should not cause breakouts. In fact, by removing dead skin cells and debris, it often helps prevent breakouts. If you experience breakouts after dermaplaning, it may be due to the products used afterward or an underlying skin condition that should be addressed.

Myth #3: Dermaplaning is Painful

The Truth: Most clients find dermaplaning to be relaxing! The treatment involves gentle, feather-like strokes with a sterile surgical blade. Many of my Granite Bay and Folsom clients describe it as a light scratching sensation and often fall asleep during the treatment.

Myth #4: Anyone Can Do Dermaplaning at Home

The Truth: While at-home dermaplaning tools exist, professional treatments are safer and more effective. Licensed estheticians are trained in proper technique, sanitation, and can assess whether dermaplaning is appropriate for your skin type and current conditions.

Who is a Good Candidate for Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is excellent for most skin types, particularly those who want:

  • Smoother makeup application
  • Brighter, more radiant skin
  • Better product penetration
  • A gentle exfoliation option

Who Should Avoid Dermaplaning?

Those with active acne, rosacea flares, or very sensitive skin may want to consider other treatments. During your consultation at our Roseville studio, I'll assess your skin and recommend the best treatment plan for your goals.
